Zen holidays in DominicaAre you dreaming of a natural retreat ? Longing for a peaceful break away from daily hustle and bustle ? Dominica is the perfect place for you ! Known as the «Nature Island » it offers a thousand and one paths towards serenity.
French version
In spite of the fact that Dominica is just a few steps away from here, we are far from being aware of how beautiful and welcoming it is. A two-hour boat trip or a short flight is all it takes to experience a stunning change of scenery in a luxuriant environment. Known for its 365 rivers, the island has an abundance of hot springs, sulphur spas, hotels offering a perfect setting for meditation and many wellness services….The American clientele did catch on it quickly as many of them come all year round to recuperate in this outstanding setting. So why shouldn’t we enjoy it when we are so close ? The rainforest Shangri La Resort
Located in Wotten Waven, in the hills of Roseau, this eco-friendly resort will seduce nature and quietness lovers . At the heart of the rain forest, bordered by a river and a lovely waterfall, this hotel is dedicated to yoga, qi-gong and massages. Fred Philips, the owner, is an amazing 75 year-old young man. Perfect example that martial arts along with a balanced diet are the key to good health. All year round, he offers his customers early birds yoga and qi-gong classes and a free access to the sulphur hot springs. A good way to recuperate on a beautiful riverside. Of course, his restaurant serves 100% organic meals and vegetarian upon request.
There are just a few bedrooms at the Shangri La scattered in the forest and all made of wood. Opened to the outside (there are no windows), they are a living proof of the real peacefulness of this place and of Dominica in general. Nicely decorated, they have a little deck and a colourful hammock to enjoy little naps at the heart of nature. Twice a year, Diann, an American yoga instructor, comes to the the Shangri La to present workshops in an outsanding yoga « open space»…a must see ! Tia’s
It’s new, in an enchanting setting and in Wotten Waven as well. Here, each bungalow is made of wood and bamboo and decorated with a lovely taste. Just like the restaurant which opens onto the tropical forest. The hot baths are situated in small bamboo huts, providing a real intimacy to the visitors. One can unwind, enjoy a mud bath, relax in a sulphur spring, in short, build up his strength ans enhance his health ! Just a couple of steps away, a refreshing river !
Tikwen Glo Cho
Welcome to a charming estate which does not offer housing but an access to the river and hot springs. To reach this little idyllic spot, you need to go through a plantation of anthuriums, which are being sold by the owner to the locals shops and resorts. At the bottom, a river, a waterfall, a small boiling lake (to be enjoyed with the eyes, not the hands ! ), and three real tubs in which you can easily relax. Let’s not forget about the vast pond where you can feel at ease while sitting and chatting ! Before leaving don’t forget to savour some homemade fruit juice. Delicious !
Papillote Wilderness retreat
An enchanting site, still in the hills of Roseau, just a couple of steps away from Trafalgar Falls. This resort, created in 1969, is made of of volcanic rocks and local wood. The rooms show a superb colonial architecture and, thanks to the altitude there is always a chill in the air.
To reach the hot water pools, set up in the riverbed itself, you have to go through a botanical garden. One of the most beautiful of the island, this garden presents about 19 different species of butterflies and 30 species of birds. As for plants, over a hundred varieties are listed, including a few very rare ones (white ginger). After this little stroll in the garden, treat yourself in one of the estate hot baths while enjoying the subtle sound of the waterfall nearby. Patrice and Tatiana, two Guadelupeans who settled down in Dominica
Originally from Saint-François, this couple of farmers has been living in Dominica for 6 months. They have left everything behind in Guadeloupe and have chosen a life closer to nature. Why did they take such a decision? « We were in Haïti at my brother’s at the time of the earthquake last January recalls Tatiana. We lived through it, slept in the streets for two nights because our house had collapsed…We went through this « live », and once back in Guadeloupe we just could not keep on living our regular life. In March we rented our house and ever since we’ve been living in Dominica. Here, we help the Haitian community and enjoy life in an amazing environment where we have created real friendly relations with the locals. »
